Paper + Passion = Paper Plus Nelson

When you ask a kid if 33 years is a long time, they will tell you “it’s like forever”. When you ask David at Paper Plus Nelson (the business owner who enjoys his job) if 33 years is a long time, he will say “It’s gone pretty quick and has been a ball!” The combination of passion and commitment to customer service helps make the journey interesting.

David and his wife Sue co-own the Nelson Paper Plus on Trafalgar Street with Sean and Jill Weir. It is a Cooperative, so you’ll see many Paper Plus stores around the country however, every store is locally owned and operated. You can feel good supporting a local business when you shop for Books, Magazines, Gifts, Stationery and more.

Who remembers the radio ads for Moir’s Paper Plus from a few decades ago? This was when David first started, so he has been here for ages and is well and truly part of the fabric of our wonderful CBD in Nelson.

“Our customers have been amazing during recent lockdown restrictions, and we appreciate it. Our kids have left Nelson now and some have families of their own, but they grew up working in the shop and learnt a lot about how the real world works.”

You will see that the NZ Post counter is now at the Buxton carpark entry to the store, which is working well, they are fully integrated into Paper Plus and benefit from the great location, nearby parking and with NZ Post scaling down its shop in Nelson in recent years, it is a win-win situation.

“When we order books and magazines, we have access to experts in the cooperative support office who have their finger on the pulse of what’s popular and interesting. As you can imagine there are thousands of publications to choose from and we can always order any specific titles if requested.”

They are passionate about local writers and have a range of locally published books like ‘Herbet The Brave Sea Dog’ – a true story about a dog in the Marlborough Sounds. Also ‘Micky Finds A Pet Human’ – a locally published children’s book about a local musician and his #1 fan SPCA rescue dog and the adventures they have together.

“With any retail business staff is key. Our team of 12 local Nelsonians work very hard to provide friendly and knowledgeable service and it is our aim to meet our customers’ needs and often exceed them!

“We love working in the Nelson CBD and enjoy walking to work in the mornings, accompanied by our dog Bonnie, who is a west highland terrier and has become the shop mascot. Bonnie enjoys a good nap upstairs in the office.”

If you are looking for that perfect book or gift, need stationery for the home office or a card for a special occasion, you can find it all under one roof, plus you can mail it on the spot.
