The Flooring Room Nelson – A local success story

When we last spoke with Dean a few years ago he had just become the owner of The Flooring Room Nelson and was getting ready to set up in the new venue – and then our whole country went into the first lockdown. No pressure! He couldn’t even go in and work. It must have been a tough time. Can you remember how strange and scary that first lockdown was? None of us knew what was going to happen. And here is Dean borrowing a huge amount of money and leaping into this new adventure.

Fast forward 2 years, Dean is still smiling, and business is booming. They have now expanded their range of products to include all types of wall and floor tiles. It has become a one-stop-shop for all things flooring.

“We now employ 12 staff and we are very busy. Since bringing in the Tile Warehouse we have attracted a lot of the group home builders, who love the fact they deal with the same people for all the flooring quotes and orders. Our installation contractors are flat out as well.” says Dean.

There has always been a strong sense of ‘family values’ behind everything they do. It’s even printed on the wall in the showroom. The new model for local business is to support local and keep the money flowing within our sunny region. Local business owners are working with others in our region like never before and it is great to see them flourish.

“We have introduced a wellness program for our staff. So we have partnered with a local massage service and make sure everyone is feeling good and healthy. It’s important to us that our staff have a space where they can open up and be real about what stress they may be under. We know the supply and shipping situation has added complications, but we are all coping well.”

The Flooring Room is part of a New Zealand owned nationwide group which means they can have that buying power to get great prices for the customers and have the range of products needed in today’s modern building industry. The Flooring Room Nelson is locally owned by Dean who has been in the flooring business for over 16 years. He and his team are very experienced, and some have worked alongside Dean for over a decade, (that says a lot) so it’s a special mix!

Hayden is one of their tile installers is very creative with posting videos that will both entertain and show you the process. It’s easy to tell these guys are passionate about their work and have a great sense of satisfaction on the building site.

Dean and his family can be found mountain biking in the hills most weekends, and recently they hiked a huge trail during the holidays.

“It was such an adventure and we climbed 6000 Metres over 4 days. Even our dog Tandy was getting tired, and I wondered if I may be required to carry her home in my pack. We love this region and its home for us.”

Dean’s wife Heather works at Clifton Terrace School and loves working with the kids there. Their teenage boys Campbell and Lawson are both into playing rugby (just like their dad) and mountain biking.
