Renaissance Organic Hair Salon – Reflecting on 15 years in business
I must let you in on a little secret. I walked into the salon to book a time for the interview. Upon entry I noticed in the mirror my hair was a mess, so Sonja squeezed me into her busy schedule, so here we are with our masks on, getting my hair cut as I write notes in my notebook. This is multitasking at its best folks!
I ask, “Have you ever been interviewed while you cut hair?” We have a chuckle, even after 15 years of being in business there is a first time for everything!” says Sonja.
I asked her about how she got into the Hair Dressing business.
“When I was 17 years old, I was working in an Orchid Nursery in Auckland (which I loved). When my appendix burst, I couldn’t do any heavy lifting and had to leave the nursery, so my sister recommended that I try hairdressing, I leapt in with both feet.
It’s taken me all around the world. I moved to Australia, which led to working on a Cruise ship and then on to superyachts with my husband for 10 years. We met all kinds of amazing people including some celebrities like the rock band U2, and the actor Johnny Depp. Now we are happily grounded in sunny Nelson with our 10-year-old daughter Rosie. We even have two Bombay cats named Cosmo and Mrs. Wobbly.”
Sonja has made Nelson her home and has worked hard at creating a space where her clients and staff feel relaxed and cared for. What’s also amazing is the painting on the ceiling. It’s beautifully done and is unique.
“The painting was here when I started 15 years ago. It’s an icon that we wanted to keep, and it consistently gets comments from our customers.
We love it that people find us from recommendations of a friend, or via our website. We’re upstairs off the street, and customers are always excited to discover our salon. It’s like a gem that’s not overly advertised. A little slice of heaven above the street.”
Sonja employs three staff, and the girls are all highly qualified and love their craft. Organic products are not tested on animals and are great to use.
