Little India – Authentic and healthy cuisine culture from India to Nelson

This week we spoke with Mani and Sonia from Little India. What a warm and friendly couple they are! They have been setting the standard for Indian Cuisine in Hardy Street for almost two decades.

Their 94-year-old Grandmother in India trains all of the Little India chefs nationwide. That’s why the standard is so high.

“When we arrived from India to Nelson it was a shock to the system. It was so quiet. Such a total change from the buzz of the big city India. It took a few years, but our kids helped us plug into the Nelson community. Our friends were very helpful in helping us get established here. Our kids love school. In the earlier days, I wanted to go back home. Sonia talked me into staying and Im very glad we did.” says Mani.

Mani has completed a Food Science degree before working in the family business. It’s part of Indi-an culture to work as a family unit. We see 24/7 Dairies in New Zealand and that’s just one example of how hard Indians are prepared to work.

Little India in Nelson has 100 seats including the lovely outdoor seating area. They also do Takea-ways, home delivery and have their very own app that makes ordering your favourite meal quick and easy online.

They have built up a solid clientele base over the 17 years they have been in business. The location is ideal, it’s on a corner and is easy to find. There’s no shortage of parking, as there is the Buxton Carpark nearby.

“Our most popular dish is Butter Chicken, but we encourage kiwis to try different things. It’s not hard, just ask us when you come in and we will suggest something that will excite your taste buds.”

There are lots of misconceptions about Indian cooking. The internet isn’t a good place to google certain dishes. Getting the authentic info can be hit and miss. Sonia tells me they have a new cook-book. Forget googling “Best Indian recipe”, you can grab a copy of our cookbook for only $40.

“All of our dishes feature non-sugar ingredients, and they also have a Keto menu for those who are operating on that diet plan. Lots of Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free and Vegan options are available. ” says Sonia

Little India is a well-established dining venue based in the heart of Nelson.

“We have clients who have been coming here for over 16 years and it’s great to have that feed-back, as we alter our menus to suit our loyal clientele.”

Of course, I have to sample some of their own Tap Beer. My first impression is it’s instantly refresh-ing and won’t leave you feeling bloated.

Know that when you visit Little India, you will experience the very best Indian cuisine and service. These guys are ‘local as’ and great to chat to.
