Busy crafting stars to hang in our Matariki window display: Nelson Provincial Museum

Our team have been busy crafting stars to hang in our Matariki window display ?
Matariki is a special occasion in our calendar which marks the start of the Māori New Year. Matariki is a star cluster that appears in the early morning sky in New Zealand during the mid-winter months. This year, the first public holiday to celebrate Matariki will take place on Friday 24 June, marking the reappearance of the constellation.
We are all so looking forward to next week’s celebration! What are you and your whānau doing to celebrate?

What’s new in our Museum Shop?
This week we are profiling Contemporary Revolution Art by Natalie Walker and her beautiful range of jewelry.
Natalie Walker – Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Kuia, is a contemporary Māori artist based in the Nelson Tasman region. Natalie has always been drawn to creative outlets, especially art, since a young age. Natalie’s aim with her Pounamu collection is for the observer to sit in their whare and contemplate the spectacle of our environment, below, within, and above us.
