Shop local campaign to give tills a tingle ahead of Christmas

Shoppers in central Nelson have extra incentive to buy local in the lead-up to Christmas, including the chance to spend $10,000 in a day.

Uniquely Nelson’s Shop til You Drop campaign was launched last week. Each retail purchase made in the central business district allows shoppers to enter a draw for cash and other prizes leading into Christmas.

BRADEN FASTIER / STUFF Uniquely Nelson team members Chandra Tandukar, left, manager Simon Duff, and Michelle van Dyk promote the Shop til You Drop campaign in the central city.

Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy said the promotion was probably the biggest the organisation had done. It came in the wake of an “absolutely tough” few years for shop owners, hit by Covid and rising costs.

“We wanted to do something fun that stimulates business and motivates the rest of the community to come into town and shop till they drop,” he said.

Entries can be made by scanning a QR code on promotional fliers or through the uniquelynelson.nz website. A receipt is needed as proof of purchase (excluding alcohol, cigarettes and vapes), there are no limits on the number of entries, and each will be eligible for the three prize draws.

Entrants have to be over 18, and New Zealand residents.

The first prizes, $2000 cash and a separate Helicopter Nelson NZ flight for four people to Mt Starveal, were to be drawn on Sunday. Up for grabs in the second week are $2000 cash and a weekend stay at Ratanui Lodge in Golden Bay, with the big $10,000 prize drawn on December 11 along with a separate prize of a large flat screen TV from Noel Leeming.

The $10,000 prize winner will be picked up for a breakfast in the CBD before deciding where to spend the money during the day.
