Nelson Provincial Museum – Our heritage and identity

Discover exciting insights and breathtaking taonga (treasures) as you explore the people, environment, and stories of the Nelson Tasman region.
In April, Nelson Provincial Museum launches ‘Morimoritia Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho | Treasured: Objects of Mana & Significance’. This stunning new temporary exhibition showcases objects from the collection, ranging from outstanding Māori taonga (with labels written by whānau themselves), to paintings by European masters, specimens of our extinct species, rare books and gorgeous textiles.

One of the Museum’s core responsibilities is to protect and care for the regional heritage collection of Nelson Tasman. This collection consists of over 200,000 taonga and objects, 1.2 million photographs and over 150,000 unique documents. Valued at $20m, the irreplaceable collection is stored in a building in Stoke which suffers from multiple issues including limited seismic strengthening, lack of water tightness, a flood prone site, and asbestos.
