Oriental Rug Gallery is owned and operated by Hoss, who was born in Iran, where the rugs are hand-made using traditional materials and techniques. His warm and genuine personality makes buying a rug both enjoyable and an educational occasion as there is a lot to learn about and understand.
The Persian Rug is a vibrant style that has been around for thousands of years. Iran is a Region of Persia, that homes people from the many cultures surrounding it – hence the many different variations. Persian rugs stay in fashion and conjure feelings of warmth and comfort as they transform any room into an inviting environment of quality and style.
“Each rug holds a piece of culture and history. They can’t be compared to cheap mass-produced rugs made by a machine using synthetic materials. Some of the rugs on show are over 5 generations old. They can also be an antique heirloom that’s commonly passed down through family generations because they hold a story and are built to last for hundreds of years if looked after.” says Hoss.
Hoss is a kiwi citizen who moved here with his Swiss wife 27 years ago. He’s well known for his passion to present these authentic products and share his knowledge to the customers. He’s operated in multiple locations in the Nelson CBD over the past 25 years and loves dealing with people.
“I enjoy talking to anyone who comes into the shop, it’s like an art gallery and there’s a lot to see from rugs of all sizes, hallway runners, homewares and antiques. Some of the rugs took 6 years to make, so it’s important to make sure everyone understands the range, materials and techniques that were involved in creating them.”
On the weekends Hoss loves climbing in the mountains and is an active member of the local Search and Rescue (SAR) team. Something very interesting that you should know is that he won Gold at the National games in wrestling in New Zealand, then he went on to win Gold at the Oceania games. He qualified for the olympic games, but at the time, he didn’t have enough money to travel, so he had to pass.
