Classes and events at The Armarie Room
The Armarie Room regularly hosts events designed to share knowledge of printmaking and letterpress. We’re passionate about providing opportunities for hands on learning and celebrating the culture of art and design.

This is an opportunity for tamariki to use our beautiful collection of wooden type to create quirky designs and fun posters. This workshop will appeal to those with creative imaginations who love working with their hands.
Participants learn in a small, friendly group and will take home beautifully printed original works of art on paper. Bring along a favourite quote, phrase or inspiring text. (5 – 8 words recommended)

This will then be printed using our oldest heritage press in the printery – the 1860 Albion Press. Draw Cut Ink Press
4 week course; 10 hours.
This course introduces and develops relief printing techniques. You will learn how to use various carving tools to create a relief image that can be inked and printed. There will be time to learn, develop and experiment with a range of cutting techniques. By varying the carved marks, spectacular effects can be created with this single colour process.
There are a variety of presses in our printery that can be used to transfer your artwork from block to paper. These include our 1860 Albion press and traditional etching press. You will also be taught how to print with a hand baren, so you can further explore this fine printmaking tradition in your home or studio. We will use hand brayer inking techniques and experiment with colour mixing, ombré and embossing.
Whether you are new to print or looking to refresh your understanding, this is a fantastic way to explore a variety of techniques in our purpose-designed studio. Participants learn in a small, friendly group and will take home beautifully printed original works of art on paper.
