A cool, but not cold, winter ice-skating experience is on its way to Nelson.
Nelson City Council is encouraging our community into the city centre this winter to enjoy a piece of winter wonderland with an indoor, artificial ice rink, operated by Ice Skate Tour.
Taking over the former Variety Store in Wakatu Square Carpark for five days from Wednesday 9 August, the ice rink looks like ice, and feels like skating on ice, but it’s a sustainable, reusable solution with no need for water or power to keep the rink cold.
Tickets to skate are $5, including skates and safety equipment hire, which must be worn by those aged 16 and under. Skaters are guaranteed half an hour on the ice, which starts when they check in. An announcement is made when your time is up, but if the rink is not too busy you may be able to stay longer.
Proceeds from the event will go to Fifeshire Foundation’s Winter Grants Scheme. The winter grants are used to support local families facing hardship this winter by helping with the cost of power or firewood. The scheme has also received support from Network Tasman Trust and Whakatū Rotary.
The event is brought to you by Council’s Winter Activation Fund and supported by Uniquely Nelson and MoreFM.
