Crafting Stories, Framing Dreams: The Artistic Mastery of The Framing Rooms

Art has always been something kiwis use to adorn and express their personality in their homes and workplaces. Art tells a story, it transforms a space, and the second you see it, there is an instant feeling or idea that is born. It’s a beautiful thing, and presenting that artwork is very important. That’s where the Framing Rooms enter the stage.

They have been operating for over 15 years in the region, and they are now a team of 5 who are passionate and have mastered their craft to the highest level. Each person has a specific part to play in the process. From helping the client choose the best frame and matt board, to cutting the corners to perfection and installing the glass.

The glass is a work of art in itself… It enhances and protects the art-work from harmful UV rays, insects and moisture which can devalue the artwork and fade the colours.

Gill and James came to New Zealand from Brighton in the UK in 2000. It was an adventure and they chose to explore this wonderful country in a van. Returning in 2002 they decided to pick apples and earn some money. Nelson won their hearts and they chose this region as a viable place to live.

James has been in the framing industry for over 30 years. His knowledge and skill is world class. Gill (his partner) has eased her way into the business as it has grown and happily greets the cus-tomers at the counter. She helps run the business side of things.

It’s a beautiful space, half gallery and half framing workshop. Local architect, Richard Sellars, helped design the floor plan so there is a natural flow between the two halves of the business.

“There was a lot to fit in, and we needed to get the natural lighting and feel right. The building was formerly the Nelson Evening Mail. With lovely timber floors above with the concrete block industrial look, it’s an inspirational place to work. Loads of parking, it’s perfect for us.” says Gill.

“People frame all sorts of things from Tee shirts, Artworks, Medals, Posters, Embroidery projects and more. We offer speciality glass that protects artworks from damaging UV light and has antiglare properties. It’s imported from USA and we have a huge range of frame moulding designs from around the world.”

Choosing your frame moulding is easy with help from the staff. They have an eye for it with experience to back it up. You feel like you are always in control, but with the right advice you can know you’ve made the right decision. When framing an artwork you need to consider negative space, edges, style, matt board mounting dimensions and glazing.

The Framing Rooms make 60 frames per week (approx). All are of the highest quality, made with precision using the latest technology. Super-sharp guillotines slice the mitred corners, an under-pinner connects them, matt boards are cut perfectly and the artwork starts to shine.

Know you are supporting a hard working local business. Your art deserves that bespoke service so it can shine and the Framing Rooms is the best place to go. There’s loads of useful information on their website.
