This unique event is your chance to explore the behind-the-scenes world of aviation. Feel the adrenaline rush as you step onto the same runway where planes take off and land. It’s a rare opportunity to see the airport from a whole new perspective.
Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this lively gathering for a donation that will support the entry of Nelson Airport Rescue Fire Service team members participating in the 2024 Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge. The massive annual fundraising event is the ultimate challenge for firefighters from all over Aotearoa to give it their all for Kiwis living with blood cancer by climbing Auckland’s Sky Tower in full firefighting kit. Proceeds go to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ.

Kia ora team, we’re excited to join you for this sunset stroll down the runway in support of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ on Saturday night. This post contains important information about the event, including key safety messages.
Parking
Parking is free in designated areas that you will enter prior to reaching the main airport entrance barrier arms. Please follow the instructions of our marshals who will direct you to the designated areas.
Assembly Point
Make your way to the signposted outdoor Assembly Point at the eastern end of the terminal building. Assemble from 7.30pm, ready for the essential safety briefing prior to heading out onto the runway after the last flight lands just after 8pm.
Key safety information
– Please remain on the runway during the walk and stay clear of the runway lights and any runway equipment. The full runway walk distance is approximately 3.6km. You are welcome to jog or run if you like.
– Marshals in hi-viz will direct you, please follow their directions and instructions, they are there for your safety.
– Dogs/animals are not permitted except service dogs.
– Smoking/vaping is not permitted – please use the dedicated smoking/vaping shelter by the pick-up and drop-off area of the airport.
– No alcohol
– Scooters/prams are allowed provided they’re not electric.
– No bikes/skateboards/other recreational wheels please.
– Injuries or any concerns should be reported to nearest marshal as soon as possible. We have paramedics on-site to assist and vehicles readily available to transport anyone unable to continue. Look for the orange golf carts at either end of the runway, or the ute in the middle!
– Special assistance is unfortunately not available for this event.
– Water bottles are allowed, however it’s important you do not drop anything on the ground as this can be hazardous to aircraft. If you see any rubbish or debris on the ground that another participant has dropped, and you’re able to pick up, please do so and hand this to a marshal.
– Lost children should be reported to the nearest marshal in hi-viz as soon as possible to aid reuniting with parents or guardians. Our marshals are all in radio communication to assist.
– Vacate: If we need to vacate the runway for any reason, please follow the directions of the marshals and always look after your children or dependants.
– Event end: We will be looking to conclude the event just after 9pm to reopen the runway for ambulance flights to operate if required. At this time marshals will begin turning people around from wherever you are on the runway and directing you back to the terminal, even if the walk isn’t completed. Please follow their directions.
– Leaving the airport: Please be mindful of your speed and other participants.
– Toilets will be available in the main terminal until 9.30pm if required.
