Mango Restaurant & Bar: Serving An Amazing Mix Of Indian/Malaysian Food In Nelson CBD

I walk into Mango Restaurant & Bar on Hardy Street. I am greeted by Pratap, who is the owner. Such a nice guy!

He has worked in India in over 7 restaurants and was looking into the idea of investing in a local business. A friend of his who had relocated to Auckland convinced him to visit New Zealand, and once he discovered Nelson it was a done deal!

“The mountainous backdrop behind Nelson reminded me of the Himalayan Mountain ranges back home in Northern India. They have a certain grounding effect when I’m so far from my birthplace. After trying several different regions, Nelson ticked all the boxes.” says Pratap.

Think back to the year 2000 when we were all worried about Y2K – it was an interesting season, to put it mildly! Pratap had recently discovered the Nelson/Tasman region and was working as a chef in a local restaurant. He decided it was time to start up his own restaurant called ‘Simply Indian’ in Motueka. It was a hit with the locals and as word spread the phone started ringing.

The owner of the current venue on Hardy Street was looking for the ideal Tennant, and with Pratap’s restaurant doing well in Motueka, he said yes. Soon after Pratap partnered with a local businessman, and expanded to Blenheim, where it’s a popular dining location.

It was a bold move, and the decision to present a fusion (mixture) of Indian and Malaysian food was in hot demand in Nelson. It’s healthy, quick to order and very filling. There was nothing quite like it in the CBD and the local Nelson word of mouth spread quickly.

“It’s a formula that works well with kiwis who like to mix it up and enjoy affordable healthy food and an international flavour. It’s healthy and convenient. The Naan bread has been tested by the Cawthron Institute and it’s 98% fat-free. Their experienced chefs use only the freshest produce to make great food every day. There are no processed or frozen shortcuts in our kitchens.

Enjoy yummy curries, noodles or our unique Naanwiches, made with the highest quality spices that won’t leave you feeling guilty. With delicious options starting at just a few dollars, we offer true value for money.” says Pratap.

His son, Ravi works in the front-of-house role in Nelson. He’s very welcoming and is passionate about working for the family business.

This is something we see often here in Nelson. International-styled restaurants are a family affair. Working together and working hard. Attention to detail is a top priority and customer service is paramount.

During the Covid challenges, they decided to make some changes and invested in building an app. You can download it to your phone and it’s easy to order and pay for your takeaway or they can deliver to your door.

Mango Restaurant is a fantastic example of how to survive and thrive in the new hospitality environment. The fresh layout with vibrant images and bright colours fits the brand and it’s great to know you can enjoy both healthy and tasty cuisine during the week.

Mango Restaurant is here to stay. For those who work in the CBD, grabbing a quick lunch in between busy periods can be tricky. It’s easy to skimp and be lured by the overly processed ‘fast foods’. Mango has an affordable solution for you that will leave you with long-lasting energy.
