New Exhibition At Quiet Dog Gallery: “What You See Is What You See”
An exhibition of abstract minimalism with Amanda Wilkinson, Simon Hunter, Kathaleen Bartha & Stan Bowski.
“It isn’t necessary for a work to have a lot to look at, to analyse one by one, to contemplate. The thing as a whole, it’s quality whole, is what is interesting.” Donald Judd
Introducing Stan Bowski, a Nelson artist known for constructing minimalist art. One of his most memorable experiences was encountering a Donald Judd exhibition in London in the 1980s. Judd continues to influence his practice to this day. Come and see work by Bowski in our new abstract minimalist exhibition “What you see is what you see”
Introducing our second artist Amanda Wilkinson. With a background in industrial design and a fascination with architecture, Amanda’s detailed paintings celebrate line, form and structure. Her abstract artworks do allude to a place and a memory but viewers can bring their own meanings to each one. Welcome Amanda to Nelson at the opening on Friday. Artwork pictured ‘Scorchio’. Acrylic on linen.
Our third artist is Simon Hunter from Nelson. His large scale paintings feature incredibly detailed grids that are memorising to look at. Come and see them for yourselves (detail of painting shown).
Our fourth artist, Kathaleen Bartha, brings two impressive large scale paintings to this minimalist exhibition. She says “I prioritise the elements over storytelling, inviting viewers to contemplate space, colour, and form in a serene abstraction”
This exhibition brings together four artists who strive for simplicity and order in their work. All are influenced by the Abstract Minimalist movement that began in America in the late 1950’s. The artworks are not representative of anything else, such as a landscape or a still life. They highlight the materials the work is made from and a simple composition. The rectangle or square are favoured forms and the work relies on the qualities of repetition, line and precision. The title of the exhibition is a quote from Frank Stella, a key innovator in the abstract minimalist movement. When looking at the work “what you see is what you see”.
