Owned and operated by Edward and Laurie Durbridge-Hunt, Cunningham Construction boasts a team of four skilled builders with a passion for residential construction and renovations.
Edward and Laurie, who were high school sweethearts, attended Waimea College and Garin College respectively. They now happily raise a young family in Nelson, where they cherish a lifestyle filled with sports, outdoor adventures, and quality time with friends and family on weekends.
Under the mentorship of his father-in-law and previous owner, John Cunningham, Edward embarked on his career, refining his skills over 14 years, and now leading the team effortlessly. Laurie manages administrative responsibilities, leveraging her keen insight into client requirements and industry dynamics.
The previous owners John and Sue Cunningham are still around making sure Edward & Laurie are doing a good job. Sue is now an employee and works primarily on quotes and invoices and is a very appreciated and valued member of the team. John will pop into the office from time to time for a coffee, a gesture greatly appreciated by all.
“I enjoy browsing homes in magazines, online, and on Trade Me, drawing inspiration from photos. There’s something special about transforming a house into a home for a family – t’s a true passion of mine.” says Laurie.

“For many renovations, the clients are still living in the house, so being respectful and keeping the site tidy and safe is very important. It can feel a bit disruptive for some, so we work hard to keep to the timeline and have healthy communication with our clients. Once the job is done and photos have been taken it’s a happy day for everyone and we enjoy this aspect very much.”
