Kia toa – be brave.
As Māori, we are a warrior culture. This Toa (warrior) series symbolises qualities of true warriorship – courage, skill, protectiveness, kinship, alertness, respect, integrity, honour, self-sacrifice, discipline, and strength.
These are qualities still needed for our people to overcome difficulties and preserve the values and culture handed down by our tīpuna. The battles are many – economic, cultural, social, environmental, and spiritual.
At a personal level, Toa represents the battles and challenges we face and how we deal with them.
“Kia kaha, kia toa, kia manawanui!” Be strong, be brave, be resolute!
