Music is the word these holidays

The Theatre Royal stage will be taken over by greasers and a wonderland of strange creatures as the Nelson Youth Theatre brings two classic musicals to life during the school holidays.

Aria Gibney as Alice meets Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee during rehearsals for the Nelson Youth Theatre production of Alice in Wonderland JR.

The group’s production of Grease! will run from April 16-26 at 7pm, and Alice in Wonderland JR will play from April 18-26 at 2pm.

Youth theatre director Richard Carruthers said both family-friendly shows had talented casts of young actors ready to give it their all on stage.

Grease! is an adaptation of the classic musical made famous by the 1978 movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Set in the rock n’ roll 1950s it follows Danny, the bad boy leader of the greaser gang and his romantic rollercoaster with Sandy, a visiting Australian student.

Carruthers said with classic songs like Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted, Greased Lightnin’ and You’re the One That I Want, it was a high-energy, feel-good show that would get the audience singing and dancing along.

Alice in Wonderland JR takes the audience down the rabbit hole in a colourful re-telling of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel, complete with a cast of quirky characters, including the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts.

Last year the Nelson Youth Theatre celebrated 25 years of bringing shows to the Nelson public and giving young actors the chance to learn valuable skills and make lasting friendships.
