Over the next few weeks, we’ll be serving you an inside look at our fabulous Beehive crew
—the creative powerhouses who keep this place buzzing. A wee Q&A/peek into their day-to-day magic as makers ✨ our second introduction is @_potterbee_
What is your typical morning routine like, and how does it prepare you for your creative work? I’m an early riser, so often I start with exercise, then my focus is getting the kids ready and dropped off to school. Not very zen!
What elements are most important for you to be productive and creative?
Being productive is key as my work is a slow process. I make in small batches, for example if a get an order for 2 mugs I’ll make 10, to save time on cleaning and clay recycling. I need space away from my productive mindset to be creative. When I get ideas I note/draw them and then obsess about them until I have time to explore them. My current goal (starting this week) is to leave 1 day a fortnight free to work on new ideas.
What inspires you?
I feel most inspired when my mind is clear. I have a busy mind, so spending time being ‘present’ is a foundation for my creativity.
What type of work environment makes you happiest and most productive?
I’m very lucky as my little garage studio is my happy place! I like the solitude.
Do you have a favourite podcast or album you like to listen to while you work?
I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks. Some frequent listens are: Song Exploder, The Imperfects, Hidden Brain, Legacy, and so many more!

What is your typical morning routine like, and how does it prepare you for your creative work?
I like to start the day with a healthy breakfast and a pot of quality earl grey tea. (I’m having a tea moment) I walk to my studio/ showroom everyday and that clears my head and helps me think about what I need to do for the day.
What elements are most important for you to be productive and creative?
I like to be organised to stay productive so I write lists and do some planning at the beginning of everyday.
For me creativity is all about play and experimentation with materials, I try to get lost in the process when designing.
What are your primary sources of inspiration, and how do they translate into your work?
Mostly nature, fashion and art… I like to find little details or imperfections that exist in nature. I often explore unique textures and elements and incorporate them into my making process.
What type of work environment makes you happiest and most productive?
I like to work with others and enjoy collaborations in the workshop. I like quiet times too. I do find I need to feel connected and adjusted to space to feel creative and productive. I really enjoy the flow of having my showroom and workshop in the same space again since moving my retail/studio space upstairs on Hardy Street.
Do you have a favourite podcast or album you like to listen to while you work?
I like to listen to podcasts “Creative Connections” and “The Creative Kind” both highlighting creatives in New Zealand and abroad. I also like listening to an eclectic mix of music from Jazz to 70’s rock and 90’s alternative, even hosted a sound bath in my studio recently.
