We use these e-pānui to share news and info about our clinics and services as well as Community Centre activities and community notices.
It has been a very busy few months here at the community centre. Our Matariki Celebration back on the 1st of July was so good. A massive thank you to everyone who contributed to what was an amazing event. We welcomed hundreds of people to come and celebrate the occasion and the process building up to the event was incredible too. More details below.
We want to take a moment to thank and acknowledge the one and only Tanya Nock, who left the VCC board recently after three years of amazing leadership and support. We are going to miss her very much. She has been a phenomenal board chair through her time supporting the Community Centre. We wish her well in her future mahi and look forward to continued connection and friendship through the very awesome Cultural Conversations.

Hāngī Service at this year’s Victory Matariki Celebration
Our Victory Matariki Celebration a couple of weeks ago was awesome. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a special day. Incredible performances, delicious kai and lots of beautiful humans coming together to make it happen. The theme of the event this year was Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone. A theme that encouraged everyone to come together to celebrate Matariki and to embrace the values of reflection, celebration, and preparation. We loved the Matariki-themed wearable arts show VPS tamariki treated us to!

Our Celebration only happens because our beautiful community comes together to make it so. A special shout out to the amazing Nadia Dysart who led the kaupapa to cook all the hāngī kai in woven harakeke kono this year rather than in foil containers. It was a massive undertaking, Nadia’s passion for the revitalization of Mātauranga Kai Māori, driving us forward. It was also very successful, thanks to all the community members who helped to weave. Through this we were able to fill lots of puku with tasty kai and increase the diversion from landfill rate for the event to an impressive 97%!
