Nelson Artistic Skating Club Delivers Strong National Championship Performance
The Nelson Artistic Skating Club has capped off an outstanding season with one of its strongest performances in recent years at the New Zealand Artistic Skating Championships.
Competing against 168 skaters from 15 clubs nationwide, Nelson’s team of just 11 skaters achieved an impressive fourth overall on club points, highlighting the depth of talent and commitment within one of the country’s smaller artistic skating clubs.
The club also celebrated individual success, with Keiko, Tara, Hayley, Valencia and Rosie winning a combined 10 national championship medals across multiple disciplines after a year of dedicated preparation.
Held over six days, the championships tested both physical endurance and mental resilience, with competition beginning at 7.30am each morning and often continuing until 10pm. Throughout the event, Nelson’s skaters consistently demonstrated composure, professionalism and determination while performing against the nation’s leading competitors.
The championships also presented a unique challenge. While the Nelson club trains on a concrete skating surface, the national event was held on polished timber flooring. Skaters carefully assessed the surface, adjusted wheel compounds and adapted their skating techniques to ensure they could perform at their best.
Behind every performance was a year of planning and preparation. Music selections, costume design and choreography were carefully developed to complement each skater’s strengths, while countless hours were devoted to refining technical skills, timing, artistry and presentation. The result was a series of polished performances that combined technical precision with confident and expressive skating.
For the athletes, the championships represented the culmination of a year of disciplined training, perseverance and commitment. With many skaters now progressing into higher competitive grades, planning for the next season is already underway. Coaches and athletes are reviewing competition requirements, selecting new music and developing fresh choreography to continue building on this year’s achievements.
Club members have acknowledged the vital contribution of coaches, volunteers, officials, families and supporters, whose ongoing commitment provides local skaters with the opportunity to compete and succeed at the highest level of the sport in New Zealand.
The club is also welcoming new members of all ages and abilities. A Free “Give It a Go” sessions are held every Saturday morning, offering a fun and supportive introduction to artistic skating for anyone interested in trying something new, learning new skills or becoming part of a thriving local sporting community.
This year’s championship results demonstrate that sustained success is built on preparation, teamwork and a strong club culture. Despite its relatively small size, the Nelson Artistic Skating Club continues to develop athletes capable of competing alongside New Zealand’s best, reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s most successful regional artistic skating clubs.
