Nelson saree exhibition grew from ‘longstanding fascination’
The stories carried in a single length of cloth are at the heart of a colourful new Nelson exhibition.
Unravelling the Saree: Beyond the Fold opens at Nelson Provincial Museum Pupuri Taonga o Te Taiao this week, exploring the history, artistry and cultural significance of one of South Asia’s most iconic garments.

Developed with Cultural Conversations, the exhibition features sarees from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan, alongside photographs and personal stories.
From family traditions and everyday life to surfing and social activism, it explores how the garment has evolved while continuing to carry identity, memory and belonging across generations.
Cultural Conversations creative director Tanya Nock said the saree was far more than something worn.
Its unstitched form allowed it to be draped and reinterpreted in countless ways, absorbing changing influences while retaining connections to place, community and heritage.
Nock said the idea grew from a longstanding fascination with the saree, strengthened by seeing women wearing them in London in 2023.
“I saw women proudly reclaiming the saree on the underground. I can still see those women and those vibrant colours now.”
Back in Nelson, she began conversations about an exhibition that could bring cultures together.
“Cultural Conversations is about friendships across cultures. It was important that this was a South Asian cultural exchange, an exhibition that would build community before, during and after.”
The exhibition also had a personal connection for Nock.
“My grandmother wore a saree to play netball every week. She lived until she was 98, and she would have loved this so much.”
Lucinda Jimson, chief executive of Nelson Provincial Museum, said the exhibition offered visitors an opportunity to explore the saree through both its artistry and the stories of the people who wear it.
“We hope they leave with a deeper appreciation of the cultures, memories and connections it carries.”
The exhibition also looks at how the saree continued to evolve through contemporary styling, new materials and changing ideas about when and how it is worn.
For South Asian communities in Aotearoa, sarees can be worn, gifted and inherited, carrying family histories across generations while gaining new meanings in a different cultural landscape.
Unravelling the Saree: Beyond the Fold opens at 5.30pm on Thursday and runs from August 28 to November 15.
