Nelson Nature and Brook Waimārama Sanctuary are teaming up to give away free native plants to help grow habitat for native wildlife across Nelson.

Make a day of it. Kids get free entry to the Sanctuary these holidays, so grab your plant and go exploring. Tucked in Nelson’s Brook Valley, the Sanctuary protects 690 hectares of native bush behind 14.3 kilometres of pest-proof fencing, the largest sanctuary of its kind in the South Island. Inside, you might spot kiwi, tuatara, and the largest population of kākāriki karaka in the country, along with kākā and other native wildlife on the walking tracks.
Try the 45-minute easy loop walk, with waterfalls, a sculpture trail and picnic spots along the way. There’s plenty for the kids too, with fun activities like Name that Tree, a weed-spotting quiz, and matching birds to the trees they love.
Leave the car at home. Hop on the eBus Route 4 (The Brook to Airport) and ride straight to the Sanctuary, just 5km from Nelson city centre. It’s a great way to start the adventure.
