Humble toastie getting a glow up in new Nelson eatery
Forget tasty cheese on white bread – a new Nelson eatery is giving the toastie a makeover with gourmet ingredients.
Trafalgar Toasties opened on Saturday in Upper Trafalgar St, with co-owner and general manager Zoe Williams saying they were elevating the toastie to the next level, beyond the tasty cheese and white bread you would use at home.
“You’re not gonna have nice expensive scamorza in your toasted sandwich at home. You’re not gonna have pecorino or, Little River blue cheese and more artisan ingredients.”
They were using locally made Big Score bread for the sandwiches, and would also offer soups for dipping, along with Rabbit Island Coffee, Williams said.

Williams’ family owns the Vic Public House and recently sold Burger Culture, but still held the lease for the building next door, so figured they might as well fill it, Williams said.
Looking at what was missing in the market, they lit upon quick, affordable lunches for less than $20 – their toasties range from about $10 to $16.
“Our impression of hospitality at the moment and trends going on is people are after quick, good, not quite so expensive food.”
She acknowledged it was a tough time to be opening a new hospitality venture, especially following a slew of high profile business closures.
“We are nervous – I think anyone would be … Some people are calling us crazy, but we love hospitality and it’s kind of in our bones, in our blood, and we don’t want to see it die or this town die.”
She urged people to get out and back local hospitality – either their businesses or others.
“I know that money is tight and stuff, but just get out there as much as you can, support local.”
Trafalgar Toasties will be open seven days: weekdays 8am to 4pm, and weekends 9am to 2pm, and available on Delivereasy.
