Here’s a feel-good local family business story to melt your heart. In 1948 it was originally formed in Richmond by Cliff Taylor. After completing a 3-year apprenticeship with a local shoe store, he ordered 6 pairs of shoes and sold them – so he ordered some more…
Shoe repairs were a regular thing and no one threw out old worn shoes… you had them repaired. This was before mass production and made in China was even a word! A small workshop was constructed at the front of the family house and a legacy was born.
In 1992 the business was established so the decision was made to open a retail store in Nelson. Cliff’s youngest son Craig and his wife stepped in to run the business keeping the focus on top-quality service and word of mouth quickly grew their customer base.
In 1993 Cliff Taylor passed away happily knowing the business was expanding into Nelson. It’s a passion that has been captured and applied by the next generation. This is the beautiful old-fashioned service model the Taylor family inherited from their Dad and embraces it to this day.
“We have 2nd and 3rd generation customers now coming to the shop. It’s an amazing feeling to know that the old-school service is still appreciated,” says Craig.
They have a beautifully curated selection of shoes in-store and online based on years of customer feedback and sourced from quality outlets from around the world.
“Some of our customers fly in from around the country and their first stop is to visit our shop. The selection is so compact and boutique, they find everything they need in an hour in Nelson.
Their designers came up with the name ‘Taylors – We Love Shoes’ – and you can tell it’s true. It’s a unique selection that many shoe stores envy. The staff are trained well and can make sure your shoe fits properly. Customers can enjoy discounts by using their loyalty system.
Question: What do you enjoy most about summer in Nelson?
“We love staying at Kaiteriteri with the boat and the grandkids. It’s truly a magical place to live and work,” says Craig.
