GBU Realty – Unlocking Retail Property Opportunities in Nelson CBD

Grant Benjamin Unsworth – hence the GBU in the business title, is an extremely talented guy and we are lucky to have him choose Nelson to be his home base. He’s from a 5th generation family who was raised in Nelson but has worked in some faraway places to build his contacts and unique skill set.

Grant has a passion for the retail sector and through his national contacts has completed over 100 transactions throughout NZ. Often it requires a process of negotiation and clever planning. They quarterback the deal so it’s a win/win scenario. The goal is to have a happy landlord and a happy retailer outcome. 100% sustainable with the numbers adding up.

Qualified and passionate about the world of finance, Grant has worked extensively in the UK and has managed the NZ Guardian Trust Property Fund. When he returned to Auckland in 1997 word of his skills travelled around the country.

“Large format retail stores like Kathmandu, Macpac, No.1 Shoes, Backdoor Surf and Hunting & Fishing are just a few we have assisted with setting up in the Nelson CBD. Some smaller boutique stores like Beetees have relocated to new premises after consultations with us. We see it as setting up these stores for success. Filtering through our experience and contacts we can advise and consult with fresh eyes.” says Grant.

Craig Chalmers is an asset to their team and operates in the Richmond area. He has a depth of experience having worked in the property industry for over twenty years in all areas including Development, Property Management, Commercial, Industrial, and Residential. Having worked for top property companies in both Auckland and Nelson including Progressive Enterprises, Viaduct Harbour Holdings, Broadway Park, Goldpine and Gibbons Holdings Ltd.

Craig has extensive experience and has been involved in various developments, ranging from luxury apartment towers to large-format bulk retail, large-scale warehousing and land sub-divisions. With additional experience in negotiating sales, leases and ground leases across all asset classes.

“Grant was excellent to deal with, and he helped us see the benefits of moving across the street. The process was communicated well with our best interests at hand,” says Glen – shop owner from Beetees on Trafalgar Street.

Accompanied by his wife Liz in the Nelson office, she works in the administration side of the business. She’s very personable and a natural problem solver. You will meet her when you walk into their office. She was a florist in previous years and has happily stepped into Grant’s business to help.

Together they have 3 kids, and the weekends are usually pretty busy with Netball games and getting amongst the great outdoors. They have a family dog called Ralph and he’s sometimes at reception with Liz. They are a lovely family with a genuine heart for helping our CBD thrive.

Their behind-the-scenes team member, Umang lives in Auckland and she’s running their IT and website.
