The Car Company – Driving Community And Innovation

The Car Company is a well-known automotive dealership with a rich history in the Nelson region and has long been a cornerstone in the community. Running its daily operations are co-owners Ben Brownie, the General Manager, and Shane Drummond, the Managing Director. With over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, Ben’s journey from a young car enthusiast to a co-owner of one of Nelson’s most respected dealerships is a testament to his passion, dedication, and deep-rooted connection to the community.

Founded by Shane Drummond, current Managing Director, The Car Company has grown from a small dealership to a significant player in the automotive market in Nelson and the surrounding regions. Ben joined The Car Company Group 20 years ago, initially working in the Richmond company, where he was a part-owner for 11 years. Over the past four years, Ben has taken on a broader role, overseeing operations as the General Manager for the entire group.

“Shane and I have been working together for a long time, and we share a passion for the business. It’s his baby, and I’m proud to be part of it,” says Ben. “My role can range from being on the floor, talking to customers, to managing our stock and working with our fantastic team.”

One of the defining features of The Car Company is its strong commitment to the Nelson community. Ben is a firm believer in giving back, a principle that has been deeply ingrained in the company’s ethos from the beginning. The company’s involvement in local sports, particularly rugby, is well-known, but in recent years, its community support has expanded to include various nonprofit organisations.

“We’ve always believed in supporting the community that supports us,” Ben explains. “Whether it’s through sports or nonprofit organisations like the Nelson Tasman Hospice, or Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge, we try to make a positive impact wherever we can.” Ben has even been a contestant for the NBS ‘Dancing for a Cause’ fundraiser.

This philosophy was highlighted during their Charity Drive promotions, where The Car Company invited local nonprofits to apply for financial support. The overwhelming response and the subsequent exposure for these organisations underscored the importance of community involvement for Ben and his team.

The automotive industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, from economic fluctuations to the rapid advancement of technology. Despite these challenges, The Car Company has continued to thrive, thanks in part to its adaptability and forward-thinking approach.

“The market has definitely been tougher this year, but we’ve been in business long enough to weather these cycles,” says Ben. “Our volume of stock, our systems, and the quality of our team have helped us navigate through these times. We’re not setting records, but we’re doing better than we expected, and that’s a positive sign.”

Ben’s role as General Manager involves a significant amount of buying, both within New Zealand and from Japan. His passion for finding the right vehicles and bringing them to the Nelson market is evident. “I love seeing the vehicles, buying them, and then watching the team get excited about selling them. It’s a process that never gets old,” he says.

A major development for The Car Company has been its partnership with BYD, a leading manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs) and super hybrids. This partnership has allowed The Car Company to expand its offerings and tap into the growing demand for sustainable transportation options.

“BYD is one of the fastest-growing brands in the world, and their commitment to quality and innovation is unmatched,” Ben notes. “Their background in battery technology, which is the heart of any electric vehicle, gives them a significant edge in the market.”

The introduction of BYD vehicles to the Nelson market has been a success, with both staff and customers showing great interest in the brand. “Our team is really invested in these vehicles, and it’s exciting to see the enthusiasm they bring to this new chapter in our business,” says Ben.

Ben’s connection to Nelson goes beyond his professional life. Having grown up in the region, he has a deep appreciation for the area’s beauty and the close-knit community that defines it. His early years were spent in Upper Moutere, where he developed a love for sports, particularly tennis, which he pursued passionately through his youth. In fact, he even represented New Zealand.

“Growing up in Nelson was a unique experience,” Ben reflects. “It’s a place where you know people by their faces or their cars, and that sense of community is something I cherish.”

Outside of work, Ben enjoys spending time outdoors, whether it’s mountain biking or jet skiing, often with his family by his side. “There’s something special about waking up on a day off, taking the dog for a walk, and just enjoying the simple things in life,” he says.

As The Car Company continues to grow and evolve, Ben remains focused on maintaining the values that have made the business a success. “We’re a locally owned company, and we like to keep things fun and flexible,” he says. “Our goal is to continue serving the community, offering great vehicles, and making sure our customers and staff are happy.”

In a rapidly changing industry, The Car Company’s commitment to quality, community, and innovation ensures that it will remain a key player in the Nelson region for years to come. The future looks bright for this iconic local business.
