Update on flood damage at the Brook Sanctuary
It’s been over a week since the Sanctuary was deluged with over a month’s worth of rain and we sustained serious damage. What a week it has been!
We’re incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community—offers of materials, help and donations have ‘flooded in’. While the final repair costs are still being confirmed, we now have the confidence that we can cover them. Any remaining funds will help us further future-proof the Sanctuary.
Update on repairs:
Whilst we wait for the engineer and contractor assessments, our amazing volunteers have been hard at work at the major slip site – securing the fence to the bedrock with steel cables.
Our ecology team has been taking stock, replacing cameras and tracking our precious kiwi as they continue to explore their new home. As the sun sets each night, the call of the kiwi can be heard through the Sanctuary. A very welcome sound after all the turmoil of the flood.

What is the most important thing in the world?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people

The Sanctuary would not be here without our people – our team, our volunteers and our incredible community of supporters, sponsors and donors.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of something truly extraordinary.
