Bridge Street project reaches Trafalgar Street

The Bridge to Better project has reached Trafalgar Street, and things are about to get interesting as one of the most significant stages so far gets started.

To continue laying the new water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure that will future-proof Nelson’s city centre for decades to come, contractors need to create a trench through the Trafalgar Street intersection.

This will require a full closure of the Bridge/Trafalgar Street intersection while the work takes place. The closure will begin on 4 May and last through early August.

“It’s a big moment for the project,” says Deputy Mayor Pete Rainey.

“Trafalgar Street is the heart of the city, so closing it, even temporarily, isn’t something we take lightly, but is a necessary step to complete the underground work that will eventually unlock capacity for up to 1,000 new homes in the city centre and make Nelson’s infrastructure fit for the future.”

And while the road is closed, Kumanu is making the most of the disruption by installing new power cables between Trafalgar Street and Wakatu Lane.

Getting around

The good news? You can still navigate around Nelson City.

During the closure, the easiest way to get around the city centre will be to use the ring roads Collingwood, Rutherford, Halifax and Selwyn Streets. These four roads form a natural loop around the heart of the city and will keep traffic flowing smoothly.

For parking, the three major carparks, Montgomery, Buxton and Wakatu — are all within easy walking distance of Bridge Street and Trafalgar Street businesses and remain fully accessible throughout construction.

Pedestrian footpaths will stay open, and every business on Bridge Street and Trafalgar Street will remain accessible throughout.

“I know all of this infrastructure upgrade seems like a bit of a hassle,” says Pete.

“But they represent progress for our beautiful little city. If you’ve been putting off a visit to your favourite city centre café or shop, there’s no reason to wait, the doors are open.”
