Annual Business Insights Survey launches to capture real-time insights from local businesses
Nelson Tasman businesses are being called on to share their experiences, challenges and outlook as the 2026 Nelson Tasman Business Insights Survey launches this week.
Run jointly by Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA) and Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce (NTCC), the annual survey provides a vital local perspective on economic conditions and business concerns, helping to balance national narratives and ensure regional voices are clearly heard.
NRDA Chief Executive, Fiona Wilson says the survey plays a critical role in contributing to understanding what’s happening on the ground.
“This is an important opportunity for businesses to directly advise us as we represent Nelson Tasman, locally and nationally. The stronger the response, the stronger our case when advocating for funding, support, and policy settings that benefit our region.”
“National headlines don’t always reflect the realities facing businesses locally. This survey gives us a clear, local view; what’s working, what’s challenging, and where the opportunities lie.”
NTCC Chief Executive Ali Boswijk says participation in the survey is essential to ensure the region’s business voice remains strong.
“We strongly encourage all businesses, large and small, across every sector, to take part. Whether you’re thriving, struggling, or somewhere in between, your perspective matters. This is about building a true picture of our regional economy.”
2026 represents the fifth year of the Business Insights Survey. Initiatives influenced by feedback to previous surveys range from NRDA & NTCC’s Covid response in the early days, skills gaps exploration, training, climate change business support, six-monthly Development Forum series, and even the establishment of the recently opened Mahitahi Colab in Māpua, Tasman.
Recent survey findings highlight both resilience and emerging pressures within the business community.
Domestic tourism continues to play a significant role in the local economy, and while businesses acknowledged increased promotion efforts, they have also expressed growing demand for more events and business event attraction to further stimulate activity.
As businesses have reported on their ongoing challenges, rising input costs have remained a consistent pressure, compounded by reduced consumer spending, declining revenue, and cashflow constraints. In 2025, recruitment and retention of quality staff emerged as a key concern, alongside broader wellbeing impacts. Despite these pressures, Nelson Tasman businesses have continued to report investment in innovation and improvement and to indicate where they can be further supported for growth.
The survey is open from Wednesday 27 May. All responses are confidential, and results are reported in aggregate.
Businesses can complete the survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S2GL23C
Participants will also have the option to receive a summary of the findings, providing valuable insights into trends, challenges, and opportunities across the region.
As a thank you for taking part, businesses that complete the survey will go in the draw to win one of ten morning tea shouts for their team; supporting local cafés and giving teams a well-earned treat.
