Karl Stubberfield – Photography with a unique twist.

We all know that the road to being a successful artist is interesting, challenging and completely different from person to person. Karl Stubberfield is a local photographer who is making some big waves in the New Zealand Arts Industry.

Born in Ashburton and raised in sunny Nelson, Karl says “The local art & music scene here in Nelson is outstanding and feeds his creative soul.”

Karl has done a range of different jobs, from managing a wool insulation factory, playing drums in bands, and serving music loving customers at Beggs Music shop.

His art involves creating subjects using recycled objects, and skilfully photographed and edited using pro design software. It’s a lot more than just a ‘nice picture’.. it evokes questions and leads the viewer see things differently. Karl gives his artworks catchy names, and spends hours hunting down items from second hand shops and creating the subject in his studio and blending ideas together.

His first public exhibition was 2 years ago at Art@203 gallery on Bridge st, which generated interest for other local gallery exhibitions like the Parker Gallery for example.

The news spread quickly and naturally which has resulted in his Photography being displayed at the Queenstown Gallery of Fine Art – which is a massive achievement and compliment in-itself. Karl is the only Photographer they feature in that space.

You can see his set of artworks on the walls at local favourite restaurant/bar, Parts & Service, located on Hardy st.

“Having my artworks in a public space has opened up some big doors for me, including some clients from outside the region.”

When he’s not creating his art, you can find Karl renovating a timber boat at Okiwi Bay. That has to be a great environment for inspiration!
