We’re transitioning to an Arts Development Agency

Kia ora koutou,

Many of you will already know that Arts Council Nelson is in an exciting period of transition, as we prepare to become an independent Arts Development Agency for Whakatū.

We are pleased to announce a key milestone in this process; last week Nelson City Council unanimously voted in favour of the Art Development Agency Transition Plan. This means we can now go ahead with the next steps in the transition process. The meeting was positive and supportive, with many councillors celebrating this as ‘a momentous day,’ one that is significant for the arts sector and the city.

Mayor Nick Smith and Deputy Mayor Rohan O’Neill-Stevens wrapped up the meeting, highlighting the importance of arts to our city. Special acknowledgement was given to Lloyd Harwood for his extended years of service and dedication and thanks was extended to the entire Arts Council Nelson team for the important work that they do.

Future Focused

The transition plan has been shaped by extensive sector engagement and consultation, Council collaboration, and best-practice research.

The new agency will be governed by a charitable trust, supported by a strengthened staffing structure, a new leadership position and further capacity, along with a robust funding strategy and a focused communications plan.

It represents an evolution to a future-facing development agency equipped to lead on sector strategy, advocacy, investment and community arts development.

You’ll hear more from us over the coming months as this transition takes shape.

Call for Trustees

The first step in our transition process is a call for trustees to form our new governing board. We are seeking committed individuals to serve as trustees to help lead the newly established Te Tai-o-Aorere Arts Development Trust, dedicated to stimulating and strengthening the artistic and cultural life of Whakatū and Te Tai-o-Aorere region.

As a trustee, you’ll play a vital role in supporting a thriving, inclusive, and forward-thinking creative sector – championing our local artists, fostering innovation, and ensuring the arts remain a vibrant part of our community’s identity and wellbeing. Your contribution will help lay the foundation for sustainable growth and meaningful impact across the creative sector in Whakatū.

This is a volunteer position. Applications close on 30 May 2025.
