Focusing on a different view
In an area known for its spectacular scenery, a new photographic exhibition is asking Nelsonians to take a different view.
The Quiet Dog Gallery is calling for community entries for an alternative photography show, From Nelson with Love, that looks at “the mundane made interesting, the hidden, the gritty, the strange and the surprising”.

“Our natural landscapes around Nelson are so stunning that they are obvious views to photograph,” said gallery owner Gill Starling.
“I can understand why people are drawn to capturing this beauty. But what we want to exhibit are the photographs that are the anti-view.”
Starling said the gallery had not staged a photography show before, and she wanted one that would pull in the community.
Photography was a highly accessible art form because most people now carried around phones.
“But instead of those big scenic shots that we see all the time, and they get a little predictable, I thought let’s turn it on its head and do an alternative Nelson,” Starling said.
“The urban shots, the nitty gritty, the little hidden spots of Nelson that people often just miss.
“It’s just really about looking in a different way.”
Starling said the photos could also be of people, and of nature, but taken in a different or surprising ways.
For the show, the gallery was accepting images of the Nelson, Stoke and Richmond areas, with entries limited to three per person and taken within the last year.
Everyone was encouraged to take part, and she particularly wanted to see entries from young people.
The photographs did not have to be a recognisable location: “I’m happy for people to go, oh I don’t know where that is.”
Starling said around 100 entries would be selected for the exhibition that would run from August 2-30.
Those selected would have to print their images on quality paper. Entries are open until July 1, with an entry form on the gallery website quietdoggallery.co.nz
The exhibition will not have prizes, but the photographs can be for sale.
