For as long as can be, humans have sought to express themselves through song and dance. It comes back to the idea that it’s not only our words that count, but how the words are said, and what our body language reveals. In a song, for example, the words could have simply been spoken, robotically perhaps, all on one note and constant rhythm so that the vocabulary itself is the only vessel for communication. However, the composer takes care to set the text within a melody, particular notes corresponding to words or syllables, which contribute something deeper to the meaning of the moment.

While we both feel very much amateurs at singing and dancing, we are regularly moved by pieces of music which compel us to have some response within ourselves, and we can seek to share those moments through our own instruments. At its best, music embodies life itself, and what better or more natural way to do that than to imitate the human voice and movements?

We have put this programme together to share a very small selection of the vast amounts of great music that exist already. These are pieces that have moved us in some way and which we felt compelled to share. Some we have learned while studying at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington, and others we are playing for the first time as we prepare this recital. Some are originally instrumental, and others are songs, written to be performed by a singer with piano but which have been arranged for the cello in the singer’s place. All of these pieces are connected by their many moments of incredible lyrical beauty and rhythmic vitality.

We are excited to perform all of these pieces in Nelson, and hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do!

Tomos Christie:

Tomos Christie is a Wellington-based cellist currently studying towards a Bachelor of Music with Honours with Dr. Inbal Megiddo at Te Kōkī, the New Zealand School of Music. He started his cello journey at eight years old, learning with Brenton Veitch, and his love of music has only grown since.

Tom aspires to a versatile career as an orchestral, chamber and solo musician, and is driven to find really creative and meaningful ways to share and communicate the things he is learning and the music he loves.

Tom has been principal cellist of the NZSM Orchestra as well as the Wellington Youth Orchestra, and has performed with the Nelson Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra, and Queen’s Closet period instrument baroque orchestra, among others. He has participated in three Adam Summer Schools, run by the New Zealand String Quartet here in Nelson, and is fortunate to study chamber music with members of the NZSQ at the NZSM. Tom is always enthusiastic about collaborating with others, and loves performing in all kinds of musical settings around Wellington and beyond.

In his free time, Tom enjoys composing, reading, cooking and cycling, and finds getting out in nature a fantastic way to release stress and inspire new ways of thinking about music!

Amelia Lin:

Amelia Lin is a passionate classical pianist currently completing a Bachelor of Music with Honours at the New Zealand School of Music – Te Kōkī, where she studies under Dr Jian Liu. Having begun piano at the age of four, Amelia was captivated by the instrument’s ability to convey deep emotion and limitless imagination. Over the years, this connection has grown into a lifelong commitment to sharing the beauty of music—both through performance and teaching.

Amelia has performed widely across Wellington and Christchurch, appearing in recitals, chamber concerts, and masterclasses. As a soloist, Amelia has also worked with orchestras, performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the NZSM Orchestra, and taking part in the NZSO’s side-by-side session under Maestro James Judd. These experiences have strengthened her musical insight and collaborative spirit.

Beyond music, Amelia finds inspiration in the ocean and nature. Her love for plants and the sea reminds her to stay grounded and reflective – values she carries into every aspect of her musicianship and teaching.
