Iwi-led playspace taking shape

If you’ve visited Rutherford Park lately, you may have noticed something new taking shape.

Since the end of January, construction has been underway on a much-anticipated new play destination for Whakatū Nelson, set to open by summer 2026/2027.

At the heart of the design is a story that begins in Polynesia and ends right here in Te Tauihu.

The epic battle between the great navigator Kupe and Te Wheke a Muturangi, the mighty octopus, is a tale of pursuit across the moana, of courage and cunning, and of how Kupe came to find these islands.

Led by Ngā Iwi o Te Tauihu through the Kōpū initiative, this narrative has shaped every aspect of the playspace: from octopus tentacles winding through the layout, to the textures, colours, and forms drawn from the ocean itself.

The design encourages tamariki and their whānau to discover, explore, and imagine their way through a series of connected play experiences, many of which have never been seen before in our wider region.

Keen to know more about the story behind the playspace? Award-winning local illustrator and children’s author Mat Tait, who has been part of the design process from the beginning, has just published a book on the story of Kupe and Te Wheke a Muturangi — available now in bookstores in both te reo Māori and English.

“To see this story being expressed through both the book and in the playspace is really exciting,” says Tait.

“Tamariki can read the book and experience the story through play. Seeing it expressed in a public place reinforces that these stories belong here. That creates a real sense of connection and pride.”

The playspace project brings together a wide team including landscape architects Isthmus, Nelson City Council, local iwi, cultural design experts, engineers and artists. Construction is being delivered by local firm Kūmānu, with a focus on quality and craftsmanship.

The finished space will include wet-pour rubber surfacing, inclusive play equipment for all ages and abilities, a new accessible toilet block, a large fenced play area, and shaded seating so the whole family can relax and enjoy.

Stay tuned, Whakatū. It won’t be long before it’s time to come down and play.
